Challenges with public transport remain mainly around its cost and accessibility. The best scenario for many international students is to live on campus so they can get to and from lectures and classes with ease. However, when it is time to shop for their weekly groceries, it is limited to small purchases as lugging bags of shopping on public transport is not extremely ideal. A taxi ride can also be extremely expensive in Australia. Otherwise, some students hitch a ride with another fellow student who owns a car.
From my experience, it can be very difficult getting around Perth on public transport. Because of the sprawling suburbs, buses will not run as often as you would expect (or are used to in major cities like Singapore) and you will have to find alternative methods to get around. On longer routes, you may want to consider the train system to get around. Even then, walking to a train station is not what you would expect either. Most Australians actually drive to the train station, park at or near it, and catch the train to work. This is commonly known as Park and Ride.
